A listing that says "Permanently closed" or "Temporarily closed" tells people not to come. If yours says this by mistake, sign in to your Business Profile, mark it open, and check that your hours are right. Then check it again every week for a while.

Fatima runs a tailoring shop in a busy market. Business was fine for years.

Then it went quiet. One regular customer called. "I searched for you. Google says you closed down."

Fatima had not closed. She had been away for two weeks for a family wedding, and someone had marked the shop as closed on Google.

This is an example, with a made up shop and name.

How a shop gets marked closed by mistake

  • You marked it yourself, for a holiday or a renovation, and forgot to mark it open again.
  • Someone else suggested it. Anyone can suggest an edit on Google Maps. If Google accepts it, your listing changes.
  • The shop looked shut. A long holiday or shutters down during the day can lead to suggestions like this.

Step 1: See what customers see

  1. Open Google Maps on your phone.
  2. Search for your shop's name.
  3. Look under the name. Does it say "Permanently closed" or "Temporarily closed"?

Step 2: Mark your shop open again

You need to be the owner or manager of the listing.

  1. Open your Business Profile. You can search for your shop's name on Google while signed in.
  2. Tap Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. Choose Open with main hours and set your hours (Google).
  4. Save.

Google may take some time to show the change.

If you cannot manage your listing yet, claim it first. Our Google Business Profile checklist shows how.

Step 3: Next time, close it the right way

  • For up to 6 days in a row, like a festival, use Special hours for those dates. Your shop stays open on Google for every other day (Google).
  • For 7 days or more, Google asks you to mark the business temporarily closed. Set a reminder to mark it open the day you return.

Our guide on getting your opening hours right on Google explains special hours step by step.

Step 4: Keep an eye on edits by others

Check your listing every week for a few weeks after the fix. If you see a change you did not make, edit it back.

A fresh photo or a short post also shows people you are open. See how to post on your Google listing, and fit these checks into a ten minute weekly routine.

What "fixed" looks like

  • Google Maps shows your shop as open, with your real hours.
  • Your phone number on Google is one you answer.
  • You check your listing every week.

Common questions

Why did Google accept someone else's edit?

Google takes suggestions from the public. You cannot stop people suggesting edits, but you can check often and fix them.

Will customers come back once it says open?

Nobody can promise that. But a listing that says closed tells people not to come.

I marked it temporarily closed. Will it reopen by itself?

Do not count on it. Mark it open yourself when you return.
