Guide cover: Open, closed or moved? Set the right status on your Google listing

Your Google listing has a status. It says open, temporarily closed or permanently closed. If it is wrong, people may not come. If you are open, mark it open. If you moved, change the address. Do not mark it closed.

Deepak ran a mobile repair shop near the bus stand. Last year he moved to a bigger shop two lanes away.

He thought the old listing was now useless. So he marked it permanently closed.

Months later, a regular customer met him at a wedding. "I thought you shut down," she said. "Google said closed."

Deepak had not closed. He had only moved.

This is an example, with a made up name and business.

The three statuses, in plain words

  • Open. You are open on your normal hours.
  • Temporarily closed. You are shut for a while, like for repairs. You will open again.
  • Permanently closed. You have shut for good. You will not open again.

If you moved, none of these is the right answer. You are still open. Only your address changed.

Fix it yourself

If your listing says closed, but you are open

  1. Open your Business Profile. You can search for your business name on Google while signed in.
  2. Tap Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. Choose Open with main hours. Set your hours for each day (Google).
  4. Save.

Our guide on fixing a shop Google shows as closed explains why this happens.

If you moved to a new place

  1. Open your Business Profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Find Location. Put in your new address.
  3. Check the map pin. It should sit on your new door.
  4. Save.

Google may ask you to verify the new address.

If the pin lands in the wrong place, see how to fix a wrong map pin.

If you are closing for a short time

Use Special hours for a few days, like a festival. Use Temporarily closed only for a longer break (Google). Set a reminder to mark it open the day you return.

Our guide on getting your opening hours right explains special hours step by step.

Then check what customers see

Open Google Maps on your phone. Search for your business name. Does it show open, at your current address? Google may take some time to show the change.

Common questions

Can I make a new listing for my new shop?

It is better to move the old one. Your reviews and photos stay with it.

Someone else marked my shop closed. Can that happen?

Yes. Anyone can suggest an edit on Google Maps. Check your listing often and fix it if it changes.

Will the right status bring customers back?

Nobody can promise that. But a listing that says closed tells people not to come.
