If your shop isn't showing on Google Maps, the cause is usually one of seven things: the listing isn't verified, the main category is wrong, the pin is in the wrong place, there are few or old reviews, the hours say you're closed, there's a duplicate listing, or the name has extra keywords that break Google's rules. You can check and fix most of these yourself, from your phone.

Google says local results depend mainly on relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews). You cannot pay for a better local position (Google Business Profile Help), so the work is giving Google correct, complete information.

If your exact name finds nothing, it's a listing problem. If your name shows but you don't appear for "dentist in Andheri", it's a visibility problem. The reasons below cover both.

1. Your listing is not verified

An unverified listing may sit on Maps, but you can't control it, and Google treats verification as a sign you represent the business (Google).

How to check

  1. Open Google Maps or Google Search while signed in to the Google account you use for the business.
  2. Search your business name.
  3. If you see a link such as "Claim this business" or "Own this business?", the listing is not verified under your account.

How to fix

  1. Tap that link and follow the steps, or start at business.google.com.
  2. Google picks the verification methods offered to you. They can include phone or SMS, email, video recording or a live video call (Google).
  3. For a video, show your signboard, the street outside, and proof you run it, such as opening the shutter.
  4. Don't edit the name, address or category while a verification is pending. It can reset the process.

2. The wrong primary category

Your primary category tells Google what you are. A mobile repair shop listed as "Electronics store" may never show for "mobile repair near me".

How to check: In your Business Profile, tap Edit profile and look at the business category at the top. That first one is your primary category.

How to fix

  1. Pick the most specific category that describes your core business, for example "Pediatrician" rather than "Doctor", or "Sweet shop" rather than "Store".
  2. Add a few extra categories only for things you really do. Google asks owners to use as few categories as possible, and not to use them as keywords (Google's guidelines).

3. The pin is in the wrong spot

In busy markets and complexes, the pin often lands on the main road or a neighbouring building. Distance matters, so a pin two lanes away can hide you from people right outside.

How to check

  1. Stand outside your shop and open Google Maps.
  2. Search your business and compare the red pin with your blue dot.
  3. Ask a customer to tap "Directions". Does it bring them to your gate?

How to fix

  1. Go to Edit profile and open the location or address section.
  2. Write the full address: shop number, building, street, landmark, area, PIN code.
  3. Use the map there to drag the pin onto your entrance, then save.
  4. Google reviews edits before they go live (Google). If you have moved premises, update the existing profile instead of making a new one, and expect to verify again.

4. Few reviews, or only old ones

Google counts reviews and ratings towards prominence (Google).

How to check: Open your listing and look at the review count and the date of the latest review.

How to fix

  1. Ask customers at the counter or on WhatsApp after the visit. Your profile has an option to share a review link; print it as a QR card at the billing desk.
  2. Reply to reviews, good and bad. Google says replying shows you value your customers (Google).
  3. Stay inside the rules. Google removes paid or fake reviews and does not allow offering a discount or gift in exchange for a review, or asking only happy customers (Google's content policy). A "discount for a review" board can cost you reviews you already have.

5. Hours are wrong, or you're marked closed

If your hours say you shut at 7 pm, an 8 pm searcher sees you as closed. Worse, a "Temporarily closed" mark set during Diwali holidays may still be there months later.

How to check: Open your listing and read the hours line. Check for "Temporarily closed" or "Permanently closed".

How to fix

  1. Go to Edit profile, then Hours, and enter your real customer-facing hours for each day.
  2. For festival days and short breaks, use special hours. Google suggests special hours for a closure of 7 days or less, and "Temporarily closed" only for longer ones (Google).
  3. When you reopen, change the status back to open with your main hours.

6. Duplicate listings

Duplicates appear when a former employee, a relative or an agent created another profile, or a move was added as a new place. Google allows one profile per business location, and a profile flagged as a duplicate won't show on Search or Maps (Google).

How to check: Search your business name, your phone number and your old address on Google Maps. Note every result that is you.

How to fix

  1. If you created the extra profile by mistake, remove it from your account. Your verified listing is not affected.
  2. If the duplicate is someone else's, use "Suggest an edit" on Maps to report it as a duplicate. When Google merges two profiles the reviews combine, though replies may be lost.
  3. If someone else controls your real listing, request ownership through Business Profile Help.

7. A keyword-stuffed name

"Sharma Sweets Best Mithai Shop Lajpat Nagar Cheapest" is not a business name; it is a list of keywords. Google's guidelines say the name must match your real signboard, with no taglines, service words, phone numbers or locations added (Google's guidelines). Listings that break the guidelines can be edited or suspended.

How to check: Compare the name on your listing with the name painted on your board.

How to fix: In Edit profile, change the name to exactly what is on your signboard. Put your services in the category, description and products sections instead.

After you fix these

Google reviews edits, so changes take time to show. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere: Google, WhatsApp Business, JustDial and your website.

If you'd rather see the whole picture in one place, Viabe Pulse is a one-off report, not a subscription, and the price is shown on the Pulse page. It looks at how your business appears on Google Maps, web search, your own website, social pages, delivery and marketplace platforms, and what AI assistants say when asked for a recommendation. It compares that with a few similar businesses nearby and shows what to fix first. Check your own business.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I see my shop on Google Maps but customers can't?

When you're signed in to the account that manages it, Google tends to show you your own profile. Check from a phone that isn't signed in to your business account.

How long does Google take to show my changes?

Google reviews edits before they appear, so it is not instant. Verification reviews can take a few business days (Google).

Can I pay Google to show my business higher on Maps?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local position (Google). Ads are a separate, labelled product.

Can I give customers a discount for writing a Google review?

No. Google does not allow incentives such as discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and removes reviews posted because of them (Google).

My business has no shop, I serve customers at their homes. Can I still be on Maps?

Yes. Google lets service-area businesses, like a home tutor or an AC repair technician, hide their address and show the areas they serve instead (Google's guidelines).
