Yes, ChatGPT and Gemini do name local shops. But they only name shops they can find clear facts about online. You can check this today, on your phone.
Think of the last time someone asked you, "Where can I get this nearby?" Today, many of your customers ask their phone instead.
An AI assistant is an app like ChatGPT or Gemini. You type a question and it answers.
Many people now ask these apps things like "best chemist near Andheri station open late". The app gives a short list of names. If your shop is not on that list, the customer may never hear of you.
Step 1: Check if AI apps name your shop
Do this on your phone, while you are at your shop. These apps may use your rough location.
- Write down three questions a customer would ask. Use their words. A salon in Andheri West might write "best salon for hair colour in Andheri West".
- Ask each one in ChatGPT and in Gemini. Start a new chat each time.
- Write down who is named. Is your shop there? Which shops are?
- Ask about your own shop. Type "Tell me about [your shop name], [your area]".
- Check the facts it gives. Look at the address, phone, timings and what you sell.
- Open the links it shows. If an old page has your old phone number, note it down. You will fix it later.
Answers can change. So check again in two or three weeks.
Where AI apps get their facts
No AI company says exactly how it picks shops. But they do say where facts come from.
- ChatGPT searches the web. OpenAI says it can use your rough location to find local places. It may also use other companies' business lists. OpenAI's help page says this.
- Gemini and Google Maps use Google's own place data. Google's new "Ask Maps" tool is coming to India. It uses place details and Maps reviews.
Your Google Business Profile is the box with your shop name, photos, timings and reviews. It shows up on Google Search and Maps.
So the apps look at things like:
- Your Google Business Profile
- Customer reviews
- Your website, if you have one
- Listing sites such as JustDial, Zomato or Practo
- Local news and blogs that mention you
Step 2: Fix what you found
You cannot pay to be named. Google says you cannot pay to show higher in its local results. What you can do is make your facts clear and easy to find.
Use the same name, address and phone everywhere
Say Google shows "Sharma Sweets, Shop 4, Aminabad". But JustDial shows "Sharma Sweet House" with an old landline. Now the app must guess if these are the same shop.
- Pick one name, one address and one phone number.
- Use them on Google, JustDial and other listing sites.
- Use them on your website, Instagram bio and WhatsApp Business profile.
Google asks for your real shop name, exact address and a working phone.
Fill in every part of your Google Business Profile
Google says shops with full and correct details are more likely to show up. Gemini and Maps use this data too.
Open your profile on your phone and check this list:
- Correct business type (for example "Pharmacy" or "Hair salon")
- Opening hours, including festival and holiday hours
- Phone number that rings at the shop
- Website link, if you have one
- Your services or menu
- Extras like parking or wheelchair access
- Real photos of your shop, inside and outside
Get reviews and reply to them
- Ask happy customers for a review. Ask at the counter, with a QR card, or on WhatsApp after the visit.
- Reply politely to every review.
Google says more reviews and good ratings can help in local results. Reviews also give the apps words to repeat. If many people write "eggless cakes", an app may say that too.
Make a simple website page
One page is enough. Write these as plain text, not inside a photo:
- What you do and which area you serve
- Your address and timings
- Your phone number and a WhatsApp link
A clinic in Kothrud should write "dental clinic in Kothrud, Pune" on the page.
Ask your web person one thing. Make sure the site does not block OpenAI's search tool, called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says blocked sites are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Get listed where your customers look
Be on the right listing sites for your trade. Tell local blogs when you have something new.
What not to do
- Do not buy or fake reviews. Google treats paid or made-up reviews as fake. Giving a discount for a review also counts. Google can remove reviews or limit your profile.
- Do not stuff extra words into your name. "Best Cheap Dentist Pune Kothrud" is not a real name. It breaks Google's rules. Repeating words again and again on a web page is also against Google's rules.
You do not need to be good with technology for any of this. You only need your facts to be clear, and the same everywhere. A little time each month is enough.
See how you compare nearby
Viabe Pulse lets you search your business name. It shows how your Google listing looks next to similar businesses nearby. It also tells you what to fix first. It is one report, with no subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay ChatGPT or Gemini to name my shop?
We have not seen any such option. Google says you cannot pay to show higher in its local results.
Why does ChatGPT give a different list each time?
It changes with your words, your location and the pages it finds. So check a few times.
Do I need a website?
Not always. The apps also use Google Maps and listing sites. But a simple website gives them one more clear source.
ChatGPT shows my old phone number. What do I do?
Open the links it shows. Then fix the number on Google, listing sites and your website, so every place matches.
Do I need special code for Google's AI answers?
No. Google says there is nothing extra to add. Your page only needs to be able to show up in normal Google Search.
