When someone searches on Google Maps, it shows a few shops first. Distance matters, but so does how clearly Google understands your shop. Nobody can set where Maps puts you. But a full and correct listing gives Google the right facts.
Deepak runs a medical store on a main road. Standing at his own door, he searched for a medical store on Google Maps.
Two other stores showed above him. One was further away than his.
When his son tried from the next lane, Deepak's store did not show at all.
This is an example, with a made up name and business.
What a Pulse check shows you
Pulse searches on Google Maps the way a customer near you would. It tries from your door, and from different sides around you, near and a little further away. Your results show:
- which shops Maps showed above you at your door,
- from which sides and how far away Maps still showed you.
Fix it yourself
- Check your main category. It should say what you are, in plain words. See choosing the right category.
- Check your map pin. It should sit on your shop door, not on the road or a nearby building. See fixing a wrong map pin.
- Fill in every part of your listing. Hours, phone, photos, services and a short description. Our Google Business Profile checklist lists them all.
- Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere. See same details on every app.
- Keep your website up to date. Put your area and city near the top.
- Keep asking every customer for a review. Then reply to each one.

Common questions
Can I pay Google to show my shop first?
Google sells ads, which are marked as ads. Your normal place on Maps cannot be bought.
Can someone promise me the top spot?
No. Nobody can promise where Maps will show you. Be careful of anyone who says they can.
How soon will I see a change?
It can take weeks. Run your next check to see what changed.
