When someone near you searches "salon near me" or "dentist in Baner", Google shows a few businesses first. Most people pick from those. If you're not there, you lose customers and never know it.
A family is new to your area. They search "restaurant near me" on Google. They see three places on the map. They read the reviews and pick one.
Your restaurant is five minutes away. They never saw it.
What Google looks at
Google says it shows local businesses using three things (Google):
- Relevance: does your listing match what they searched for?
- Distance: how close are you to the person searching?
- Prominence: how well known are you? Reviews, ratings and other websites that mention you all count.
You can't change your distance. But you can do a lot about the other two.
Google also says nobody can pay for a better place (Google). If someone offers to "put you on top" for money, be careful.
Six fixes you can do this week
1. Pick the right main category
Your main category tells Google what you are. If you run a dental clinic, the main category should be "Dentist" or "Dental clinic", not "Health".
Open your Google listing and tap Edit profile. Check the main category. Add a few extra categories for other things you really do, like "Teeth whitening".
2. Fill in every part of your listing
A full listing matches more searches. Check each one:
- Hours for every day, including holidays.
- Phone number and website.
- A short description of what you do and the area you serve.
- Services or menu, with prices if you can.
- Attributes like "wheelchair access" or "women-owned", if they are true.
3. Add real photos often
Listings with recent photos look open and cared for. Add your shop front, the inside, your team at work and your best products.
Add a few new photos every month, not all at once.
4. Get reviews, and reply to all of them
Reviews help both prominence and trust. Ask every customer for a review, not only the happy ones. Reply to each one, good or bad (see how).
5. Use your area's name on your website
If you have a website, say clearly what you do and where. For example: "Dental clinic in Baner, Pune". Put it in your page title and near the top of the page (see how).
If you don't have a website yet, make a simple one-page site (see how).
6. Keep your details the same everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should be the same on Google, your website, Justdial, Practo, Zomato and anywhere else you're listed. Different details confuse customers, and they confuse Google too.
What not to do
- Do not add area names or extra words to your business name on Google. Use your real name only. Google can suspend listings that do this.
- Do not buy reviews or give gifts for them. Google removes them.
- Do not create a second listing for the same shop.
- Do not pay anyone who promises to put you "on top".
What "fixed" looks like
After a few weeks, check these:
- Your main category matches what you do.
- Every part of your listing is filled in.
- New photos and new reviews come in every month.
- Your details are the same everywhere.
Do customers nearby see you now?
You fixed your listing. But when people search near you today, are you in the first few, or is the shop next door? Viabe Pulse scans your business online. It checks Google Maps from four directions around your shop, and shows how you look next to similar businesses nearby. Results in minutes, not days. Type your business name to start.
FAQ
Can I pay Google to show my business first?
No. Google says nobody can pay for a better local place. Google Ads are separate and are marked "Sponsored".
Why does a shop farther away show before me?
Google also looks at relevance and how well known a business is. A full listing with more reviews can show first even if it is a little farther.
How long do fixes take to work?
It can take a few weeks. Keep adding photos and getting reviews every month.
Should I add my area name to my business name?
No. Use your real business name. Put your area in your description and on your website instead.
Does my website matter for Google Maps?
Yes. A clear website that says what you do and where helps Google understand your business.
