Guide cover: Fewer photos than the shops near you? How to catch up

People look at photos before they choose where to go. If businesses near you show many photos and you show only a few, your listing says less about you. Take 5 to 10 clear photos of your own shop and add them to Google. One short visit with your phone is often enough.

Ravi runs a hardware shop on a busy road in Nagpur. His Google listing had two photos. One was dark. One was of the road.

A new customer said, "I nearly went to the shop opposite. Their photos showed the full counter. Yours showed nothing."

Ravi had a big, neat shop. Google just did not show it.

This is an example, with a made up name and business.

What Pulse looks at

Pulse counts the photos on your Google listing. Then it looks at similar businesses near you. If your listing has fewer photos than theirs, your results say so.

Fix it yourself

1. Take the photos. Go to your shop in daylight. Take clear photos of: - the front, so people can find your door, - the inside, so they know what to expect, - what you sell or make, - you or your staff at work, if they agree. 2. Pick the best 5 to 10. Bright, sharp and straight. Delete blurry ones. 3. Add them. Open your Business Profile. You can search your business name on Google while signed in. Tap Photos, then Add photos, and choose them. 4. Check after a few days. Open your listing on Google Maps. See if the new photos show.

Our guide on what to shoot and how to add photos has more tips on light, size and file type.

Use only photos you took or own. Do not use photos from the internet.

Common questions

How many photos should I add?

Start with 5 to 10 good ones. Then add a few new ones every month.

Will more photos bring more customers?

Nobody can promise that. Good photos help people who are deciding to choose with more facts.

My photo does not show yet.

Google checks new photos first. It also decides which photo shows at the top. Look again after a few days.
